Recomendations for La Feria ISD
List of School Improvement Recommendations
- The first School Improvement Recommendation would have to be the use of a standardized form across the district that would include critical information for use of parental involvement data analysis. This data would allow the school district to establish the level of correlation between teacher-parent communication, parental involvement and the students’ academic achievement.
2. The establishment of operational definitions that would allow for the understanding of what it is to be recorded and how it would be measured in regards to parent –teacher communication logs. For example a parental contact would represent any teacher-parent contacts other than progress reports, report cards, behavior calendars, etc. This establishes uniformity and measurement standards across the district.
- Another recommendation in regards to parental involvement and parent teacher contact would be the scheduling of an informational workshop that would address at minimum operational definitions, recording procedures on the standardized form, the chain of reporting and who is in charge of the consolidation of data. This would insure the analysis of accurate data.
- Have teachers serve as mentors for some of the at-risk students. This could take place before school, during lunch, or after school. Students would become familiar with one teacher, and the teacher could serve as a positive role model for that student, give encouragement, help with school work in a non threatening environment, etc.
- Create an afterschool program for students, to keep them away from gangs and to provide a safe place for students in the afternoon. Many of our students are in gangs, have siblings or parents that are involved with gangs and drugs and they could use a positive environment that offers an alternative to what they encounter on a daily basis.
- A dress code policy should be put in place for teachers at our campus. Many teachers at our Junior High School campus dress inappropriately. Some believe that it is jeans and sneakers day every day, some wear flip flops and dress like they just rolled out of bed. I believe that teachers should serve as positive role models and that includes the way they dress.
- Our districts policy in regards to full implementation of the C-Scope curriculum should be changed. C-Scope serves a purpose in that it aligns the curriculum vertically and horizontally, however, I feel it should be up to the teacher how lessons are taught, what resources are being used, as long as it stays within the same timeline and concepts, and the TEKS are followed.
